Cedar is one of the medicines of Indigenous peoples on Turtle Island. I risk cultural appropriation by making work about cedar. However, it is valuable to share that when the first settlers arrived they didn't know how to survive in the winter months. Indigenous knowledge was needed and it was shared openly and generously out of kindness and compassion. They taught that cedar contains the vitamins needed in order to not contract scurvy. It was made into a tea.
I share this and make work about cedar because Indigenous knowledge and leadership is what we need to listen to in our world today. That's what this work is about - not appropriation but rather a call to orient ourselves to listen to the wisdom of Indigenous teachings.
