These earrings are a part of my 'This Ancient Love' collection which is inspired by the words of a hymn by Carolyn McDade that speaks of the divine feminine. Here's the first verse:
"Long before the night was born from darkness
Long before the dawn rolled unsteady from fire
Long before she wrapped her scarlet arms around the hills
there was a love
this ancient love was born." - Carolyn McDade
I named the creations in this collection after a specific goddess or an aspect of the divine feminine.
These earrings are named 'Sophia' which means 'wisdom' is Greek.
In the Hebrew Bible (which as translated into Greek) God's wisdom is personified as a woman.
"An explicit way of speaking about the mystery of God in female symbol is the biblical figure of Wisdom. This is the most developed personification of God's presence and activity in the Hebrew Scriptures. ... The biblical depiction of Wisdom is itself consistently female, casting her as sister, mother, female beloved, chef and hostess, preacher, judge, liberator, establisher of justice, and a myriad of other female roles wherein she symbolizes transcendent power ordering and delighting in the world. She pervades the world, both nature and human beings, interacting with them all to lure them along the right path to life." - Elizabeth A. Johnson, 'She Who Is: The Mystery of God in Feminist Theological Discourse'.
Wear these earrings to be reminded of the ancient love from which all life came.
Wear these earrings to remember that your life is held in this divine presence.
Wear these earrings to be empowered by sacred feminine Wisdom.
These earrings are hand-fabricated using ancient silversmithing techniques in my home studio in Kitchener, Ontario.
They feature cabochon stones called 'Phosphosiderite' which is a soft mauve colour.
They are a light-weight stone which makes them idea for earrings!
The stones are set in fine silver and 10 karat gold surrounds them.
The remaining details are carefully crafted out of sterling silver.
The earrings measure 1.7cm wide and 3.6cm long - measured from the top of the earring hook.
